 John Cradock Ltd in Joint Venture with Jons Civil Engineering delivered the N22 Baile Bhuirne-Macroom Road scheme. The new dual carriageway provides is 22km long, bypasses Macroom and Baile Bhuirne and significantly enhances the regional infrastructure in Munster.

Key Features

The project was delivered on a Design & Build basis with Barry Transportation, as our primary design partner. This landmark project was delivered in phases with the Macroom bypass opened in November 2022, before the overall project was fully opened to the public in 2023. The construction of the project delivered on significant and varied challenges. Key elements of the project included

  • 22km of new dual carraigeway, with additional 10km of local roads.
  • 1,000,000m3 of earthworks with extensive rock cuts and on site movements to create the new alignment.
  • Complete new drainage networks, which interfaced extensively with the numerous sensitive watercourses.
  • 120 structures including 4 new river bridges, 12 overbridges and 25 underbridges.
  • All works were in ecologically sensitive locations with continuous engagement with protected species including Freshwater Pearl Mussel, Kerry Slug, Salmon,. Trout, Badger, Bats, Kingfisher.
  • Major traffic management measures were implemenetd at all tie in points notably including teh construction of a temporary online roundabout to enable the Macroom bypass element to open ahead of substantial completion. 
  • 120 m Bohill Bridge was the only steel structure and was installed by launching in two phases.
  • Sullane and Laney River Bridges won the 2023 Irish Concrete Society Infrastructure Award - the  two bridges are the longest prestressed concrete single span and double span bridges in the UK and Ireland.
  • S02C Arch Bridge won the 2024 Irish Concrete Society Overall Award - this 64m long bridge crossing the new dual carriageway was a feature structure on the scheme, with arches springing from the rock face.
